If you had met me a few years ago, you would never have guessed how much of my life was controlled by my bowel.
I was living with a rare condition called hypoganglionosis, meaning the nerves in my rectum no longer functioned. Those nerves are responsible for moving waste through the body, but mine had simply stopped working.
What followed wasn’t just chronic constipation, it was months of surviving rather than living.
The Breaking Point
Every single day revolved around trying to make my body work. Despite relying on multiple daily laxatives, enemas, and countless medications, I would still go over a week without opening my bowels. I lived with constant pain, debilitating bloating, overwhelming fatigue, and even numbness in my legs.
Hospital visits became my normal. Plans were cancelled. Holidays, social events, and simple trips out were always overshadowed by one exhausting question: "Will my bowel let me live my life today?"
Perhaps the hardest part wasn't the physical toll; it was the loss of dignity. When your existence revolves around bathrooms and medication schedules, you lose trust in yourself. You stop feeling like your body belongs to you.
Eventually, I reached a point where surgery wasn't just an option, it was my only chance to have a life again.
The Decision That Changed Everything
Choosing to have a stoma was the biggest and most terrifying decision I have ever made. Like so many others, my mind filled with heavy doubts:
Will people judge me?
Will I ever feel confident again?
Can I still wear the clothes I love, exercise, travel, or have relationships?
Will I ever feel like me again?
When I woke up from surgery and looked down at my stoma for the first time, I made myself a promise: I could either spend my life wishing this hadn't happened, or I could choose to make something positive from it.
That decision changed everything.
Reclaiming My Strength
Recovery wasn’t about chasing perfection; it was about rebuilding.
My first achievement wasn't running, it was walking.
My first workout wasn't lifting heavy weights, it was moving without fear.
Little by little, I rebuilt my physical strength, but more importantly, I rebuilt my confidence. I stopped seeing my stoma as something that had taken my life away, and started seeing it as the exact reason I had my life back.
Less than a year later, I crossed the finish line of a 100km ultramarathon.
I didn't do it to prove anything to the world. I did it to prove to myself that my body was still capable of extraordinary things.
Welcome to Built Beyond
That journey taught me what real resilience means. Resilience isn't about never struggling or pretending everything is okay. It is choosing to show up on the days you feel like you can't. It’s taking that first walk after surgery, stepping into the gym when your confidence has vanished, and trusting that small, consistent steps eventually become something remarkable.
That core belief is the foundation of Built Beyond.
Built Beyond is more than an online coaching business, it is a community for anyone who is rebuilding:
The beginner walking into a gym for the very first time.
The recovery client healing after life-altering surgery or injury.
The athlete chasing a ambitious personal best.
Anyone who has ever doubted what their body can achieve.
